How to tell the age of a border collie?

We got a Border Collie from the dog rescue but no one knows his age. He enjoys walks and playing with his ball but he also sleeps a lot and getting gray around his muzzle. His incisors are also worn down. The vet says you can't tell a dogs age by its teeth. Anyone got any other ideas of ageing a dog?
