What is with this?

Recently, I have become interested in calligraphy. I practice translating names into katakana, one of the Japanese ways to spell things. So, I have bean noticing this. Everywhere I go, i see people with ツ in their name or profile. Do they even know what that means? Because that is the kana for tsu. So why are they doing it? It confuses me so much!
