Why won't Nerite snail eggs hatch in freshwater?

My Nerite snails have laid a lot of eggs around my freshwater tank, they have been there for like 2 months now. I just read they will only hatch in brackish or salt water, why is that? Also, what should I do with them, just leave them there? Thanks
